Abstract
1.1. The chromatophores in the integument of the teleost Tilapia melanopleura are melanophores, erythrophores, xantophores and iridocytes.2.2. Melanophores and erythrophores contain a well-developed smooth endoplasmic reticulum; numerous microtubules are seen along the cytoplasmic processes and surrounding the nucleus.3.3. Numerous vesicles (invaginations of the cell membrane) can be seen in both melanophores and erythrophores.4.4. Nervous endings containing mitochondria and small vesicles, which have a higher electrondense core, often occur close to both types of cell (melanophores and erythrophores).5.5. NaCl and KC1 solutions are effective in promoting centrifugal and centripetal pigment displacements, respectively.6.6. A “resistance” curve was obtained by alternate KC1 and NaC1 treatment, which induced aggregation and dispersion until the system became fatigued.
